The Definition of Inspiration
It was just a normal 2 week period of activity during the summer of 2018 for
Bobbie Rose. As an avid artist, she was working on her latest project, from oil
painting to water colors to pen and ink. She’s also quite a sculptor, with clay, wood
carving, welding, the list is endless. No matter that she is 102; she has more energy
than the Ever Ready bunny.
No matter that the average July temperature and humidity was 95, Bobbie was also
active on the golf course, playing in 3 tournaments in 10 days. Tuesday July 24 was
something special, as Bobbie was being honored at the Hidden Creek Women’s
Member –Guest, as their “Inspiration” of the year. She was invited by Hidden Creek
owners Edwina and Roger Hansen, and by Bonnie Siok, daughter of legendary
Atlantic City Country Club PGA Pro Leo Fraser. 60 years ago, Bobbie had given Leo
one of her abstract paintings as a thank you gift, and the family recently found the
painting while moving.
The day’s events included lunch and dinner and golf of course. Bobbie played in a
group with Edwina Hansen, Melanie Rice from Stockton Seaview Resort and
Bobbie’s daughter Bonnie George, at age 74 a solid 6.8 handicap and an
accomplished artist as well. Over 80 golfers were in awe on the driving range,
watching Bobbie hit balls, one solid strike after another. That group included LPGA
star Julietta Granada, marveling at each flush shot.
The next 8 days included 2 more tournaments, July 26 at Yardley CC for the annual
WGAP Griscom Cup, where Bobbie (Mom) played with me. We won the event 11
times over 50 years but not lately, as Mom couldn’t quite carry me past some
younger duos. Then the next week, it was the WGAP Mater et Filia, where Mom
played with Bonnie and also granddaughter Alexandra Schultz, they were 4 time
winners. Again no titles this year, but that never bothers Mom, her annual theme is
“this is going to be my year”. Always optimistic, always looking to improve. An
inspiration to all.
